Civil Disobedience by "Scientist Rebellion" in Munich

On the 26th Ocotber around 12 pm a group of european activists from "Scientist Rebellion" took action in the centre of Munich to raise awareness about the ongoing global warming and the lack of action by politicians. Between two very popular car showrooms "Mercedes Benz" and "Cupra", they blocked the street and glued posters onto the shops to inform the public about the link between fossil fuels, the systematic failing and, as it says on a held banner, "pacing stillness" by government and industries.

Most of the activists glued themselves on the road near to the metrostation "Odeonsplatz" on Wednesday, just leaving space for bicycles but not for cars. It didn't take long, when the first police officers arrived. While the protesters were chanting and bringing information to the public, also urging to participate in the protest, many bystanders stood there to watch, to clap and to criticise the protesters.

"The goal to keep 1.5 degree is dead"

The consequences of climate change are already visible and felt, especially in the global south, that are already facing extreme weather and shortage of food. But also germany is already facing the consequences, as Environmental Engineer Wolfang Metzler says: "This summer will be the coldest summer for the rest of our lives".  Scientific but also emotional speeches echoed through the city. The protest was marked by clear statements to our current course of still burning fossil fuels, fancying a lifestyle with "heavy cars" such in the shops and governments that have failed to reach the goal of 1.5 degree.

"You are not alone, you are not alone" - around 13:30 PM, police brought the first activist, who was not glued to the streets, with them to the police car. After that, each by each will be taken from the street. Police finished around 3 PM on that day and brought the activists to the Head of Police in the Ettstraße, where they will get their identity checked. The consequence: the activists remain in custody over night to be released in the afternoon on the next day.

"Scientist Rebellion" demands the government to admit climate failure, to bring back the 9€-Ticket, a speedlimit of 100 h per kilometre and the debt cancellation of the global south, that are still dependant on the global north.

Unite against climate failure is a series of nationwide actions organized by Scientist Rebellion, Debt for Climate and Last Generation. After protests in Wolfsburg and Berlin, now Munich is on the list. The first action by Scientist Rebellion in Munich was at "Black Rock", which is known for financing fossil fuel projects.
